Pinterest image requirements
Pinterest is a visual search engine, and image quality matters enormously for click-through rate. Pinterest recommends:
- Standard pin: 1000×1500px (2:3 ratio)
- Square pin: 1000×1000px
- Long pin: 1000×2100px (still allowed but discouraged)
- Profile photo: 165×165px
- Board cover: 222×150px
Why file size matters on Pinterest
Pinterest re-encodes every upload. Files over 20MB are rejected. Files over 5MB may be compressed aggressively. Files in the 200KB-1MB range upload quickly and display sharply.
A well-compressed 500KB pin looks indistinguishable from a 5MB one on Pinterest, and uploads ten times faster. There is no advantage to uploading a large file — Pinterest will re-encode it regardless.
Format choice
JPG is the safest format for Pinterest. Pinterest also accepts PNG, but the platform converts to JPG during its own processing. WebP is not widely supported on Pinterest.
