DNI and NIE photo requirements

Spanish DNI (Documento Nacional de Identidad) and NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) applications require photos that meet specific format standards:

  • Dimensions: 32×26mm (or the digital equivalent)
  • Pixels: typically 400×480px or similar
  • Format: JPG
  • File size: 10KB-100KB, usually under 50KB
  • Background: plain white or light

The digital photo requirements depend on whether you are applying in person (physical photo) or online (digital upload). For online submissions via the sede electrónica, the file size is usually the main constraint.

Common targets

  • 20KB — for older portals with strict limits
  • 50KB — the most common requirement
  • 100KB — accepted by newer systems

If the portal does not specify, 50KB is a safe target for any Spanish government form.

Why local processing matters

Your DNI photo is an identity document. Uploading it to a random web compressor that stores files on a server is a serious privacy risk. The file could be retained indefinitely, analysed, or leaked in a data breach. FITLY processes everything locally in your browser, so nothing is ever uploaded.

This is the correct way to handle an ID photo online.

How FITLY helps

Set a target size (20KB, 50KB or 100KB) and optionally a max dimension. Drop your photo in. FITLY resizes and compresses to fit, all locally in your browser.

The tool shows you the final dimensions and file size, so you can verify the result matches the portal's requirements before you upload.

Frequently asked questions

What file size does a DNI photo need to be?

Usually under 50KB for online portals, sometimes as low as 20KB. Check your specific portal for the exact limit.

Is it safe to compress a DNI photo online?

Only if the tool processes locally. FITLY runs entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded.

Can I set exact dimensions?

Yes. Use the max dimension field to set the long edge of your photo.

What format should I use?

JPG. Spanish government portals do not accept WebP.
