Japan visa photo requirements
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Japan requires photos that meet the following specifications:
- Dimensions: 45×45mm (for most visa types)
- Format: JPG
- File size: usually under 100KB for online submissions
- Background: plain, no shadows
- Head size: 32-36mm from chin to crown
Some Japanese embassies and consulates have additional requirements, and the exact file size limit can vary by embassy. The 100KB upper limit is a safe target for most portals.
Recommended target
For most Japan visa applications, 50KB-100KB works well. It uploads quickly and preserves photo quality at typical ID display sizes. The photo will only ever be viewed at small sizes — passport photos and visa photos are never printed large — so there is no benefit to uploading a large file.
Format choice
JPG is the standard for Japanese visa photos. Avoid PNG and WebP — Japanese government portals are typically strict about file format and only accept JPG.
Privacy for immigration documents
Your Japan visa photo is an identity document. FITLY processes everything locally in your browser — nothing is uploaded to any server. This is the correct way to handle an immigration photo online.
