SSC photo and signature requirements
The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) of India has historically required very small photo and signature files for online applications:
- Photo: 20KB-50KB, JPG, 100×120px to 200×230px
- Signature: 10KB-20KB, JPG, 140×60px
These limits are strictly enforced by the application portal. Files that are too large are rejected immediately. Files that do not match the required dimensions are also rejected.
Why SSC limits are so small
SSC receives millions of applications every year across its various recruitment exams (CGL, CHSL, MTS, GD Constable, JE, and more). To handle this volume, the portal enforces small file sizes to keep storage and processing costs manageable. The limits have been in place for over a decade.
The result is that applicants regularly struggle to produce a photo that is both small enough and visually recognisable. A 20KB photo has to be tiny in pixel dimensions — usually under 200×230px.
How to prepare your SSC photo
- Start with a clear, well-lit photo of yourself, face forward, plain background
- Crop it to the correct aspect ratio for SSC (typically square or 4:5)
- Resize to the required pixel dimensions
- Compress to under 20KB
