How WhatsApp handles photos

WhatsApp automatically compresses images before sending. When you share a photo, WhatsApp reduces its dimensions to a maximum of about 1600px and re-encodes at a JPG quality it controls. In most cases the resulting file is 100-300KB.

You can send photos as 'documents' to preserve full quality, but WhatsApp's default photo sharing pipeline is designed to balance quality against data usage. That means the photos you send are already compressed — and if you started with a heavily compressed image, WhatsApp's compression compounds the artefacts.

Why pre-compress for WhatsApp

There are two good reasons:

  • Faster sharing. A 200KB image uploads instantly even on weak mobile data. A 5MB image can take a minute or more on a poor connection, sometimes failing outright.
  • Better final quality. Pre-compressing to a moderate size lets you control what WhatsApp receives, rather than sending a bloated file that WhatsApp then crushes.

Recommended size for WhatsApp

  • Around 200-500KB per photo is ideal
  • 1600px on the long edge matches WhatsApp's own maximum
  • JPG format for maximum compatibility

At these settings, WhatsApp's re-compression has little to work with, and the final quality you see on the recipient's phone is close to the original.

Batch preparation

If you are preparing to send a large batch of photos — travel pictures, family events, product images — compress each one to 200KB first. A batch of 20 photos will be around 4MB total, which sends instantly and uses minimal data.

Frequently asked questions

Does WhatsApp compress photos automatically?

Yes. WhatsApp resizes to about 1600px and re-encodes to JPG, usually landing around 100-300KB.

What is the best size to send on WhatsApp?

200-500KB per photo. Small enough to send instantly, large enough to look sharp on any phone.

Will pre-compressing hurt quality?

No. WhatsApp compresses anyway. Pre-compressing to a moderate size gives you more control over the result.

Can I send full-quality photos on WhatsApp?

Only by sending them as documents, which skips WhatsApp's compression.
